I bought three translucent plastic ocarinas, a while back, in three different colors. They were inexpensive. All three were playable for most of the range. One was playable such that a good ocarinist would probably be able to make it sound fine, throughout its range. Another was just slightly less playable on the highest notes. The other really wouldn't play the highest note, and only barely the second highest, though this still is a greater range than a good many ocarinas, as these have the 10-hole Budrio-style fingering.
Each came in a clear vinyl snap-closed case, and had a finger-position diagram, but no fingering chart, showing how to make the notes.
Probably the most distinctive feature is the way these ocarinas are made. They are sweet potato style, but there is a thick ridge around the edge of the body of the instrument (not on the mouthpiece). I think this helps them to be less leaky, if nothing else.
They are altos. I gave one away.

The thick ridge you speak of. Is it like like a flat edge sticking out of it? I had one like that but it was blue.
