I wonder if anyone has actually made an oc from this tutorial. You'd have to know how to do pottery first, I think.

I partially used that process--I used a separate method of forming the body, but I used this method in a lot of other areas. Hi, by the way, especially to all my comrades from TON!

Hi there! I've been working with clay for the past 14 years, and I also teach sculpting, hand-building and pottery. I found this site a while ago while I was researching clay musical instruments. I think it's one of the most complete tutorial on how to make a clay ocarina, and in my opinion, you don't need a whole lot of experience with clay to go through it. However, I would advise skipping the plaster mold, and go with the clay mold instead. Plaster molding is an art in itself, and for a beginner, may be a serious deterrent. I made my clay mold a few months ago and fired it. I'm only starting now to use it, while following the instructions in the tutorial. The shell is built, and the rest will be coming soon. I'll take pictures and keep you posted, if you're interested. The only thing I think the tutorial is missing are exact measurements - I like to be precise in my work... - but from the variety of sweet potato ocarinas I've seen, I guess size is only a matter of personal preferences. Time will tell, I suppose, as I become more familiar with this instrument...

Great site. I wonder if anyone has actually made an oc from this tutorial. Sandy I have made one using the directions from this site. I had to make it without a mold and with limited tools ( I made it in a high school art room). I haven't fired or glazed it yet, but as is, dried, it plays just fine. I got it as close to in tune as I could, and it really doesn't sound that bad!
